Former Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder Brent Carelse has shared his thoughts on the Soweto Derby while offering an assessment of Kaizer Chiefs’ chances of challenging for the Betway Premiership title during the 2026/27 campaign.

Carelse, who previously represented Sundowns, believes the Soweto Derby remains one of the biggest and most important fixtures in South African football. The rivalry between Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs carries enormous history, passion and expectations, making every meeting between the two clubs a significant occasion.

The latest encounter once again attracted widespread attention, with both teams looking to secure bragging rights and strengthen their positions in the league. The derby also provided an opportunity for the two Soweto giants to demonstrate their ambitions as they continue competing for domestic honours.

However, Carelse's assessment extended beyond the outcome of the derby, with particular attention given to Chiefs' ambitions of returning to the summit of South African football.

The Glamour Boys have endured several difficult seasons without winning the league championship, increasing the pressure on the club to deliver meaningful progress. Their supporters are desperate to see the team competing consistently against the country's strongest sides.

Chiefs have shown signs of improvement, but maintaining consistency remains essential if they are serious about challenging for the championship. Winning important matches against direct rivals and avoiding unnecessary dropped points against smaller teams will be crucial.

The competition is also becoming increasingly demanding, with Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns continuing to set high standards in the title race.

Carelse's comments add another experienced voice to the ongoing discussion about whether Chiefs have enough quality and consistency to mount a genuine championship challenge.

For the Soweto giants, the remaining fixtures will provide an important opportunity to demonstrate their progress and prove that they can once again compete for the Betway Premiership crown.
