Mamelodi Sundowns head coach Miguel Cardoso has admitted that his team only have themselves to blame after suffering a shock elimination from the CAF Champions League at the hands of Angolan side Wiliete SC.
The defending champions were knocked out in the second preliminary round on Friday night after a disappointing 1-1 aggregate draw, ending their hopes of retaining the continental title. The result also means Sundowns have failed to reach the group stages for the first time since 2015.
Sundowns entered the second leg at Loftus Versfeld needing a victory after playing to a goalless draw in Angola. Tashreeq Matthews gave the hosts an encouraging start by scoring in the 10th minute, raising hopes of a comfortable progression.
However, the Brazilians failed to capitalise on their early advantage, with Brayan León missing two important opportunities before the interval. Those missed chances proved costly when Wiliete punished a defensive mistake shortly after the restart.
Cassius Mailula's poor back pass allowed Angolan striker Mabululu to break through and beat goalkeeper Ronwen Williams, levelling the match and putting the visitors in a favourable position under the away-goals rule. Sundowns could not find another goal and were eliminated.
Speaking to SABC Sport after the match, Cardoso expressed his disappointment and acknowledged the responsibility that comes with failing to achieve the club's objectives.
The Portuguese coach believed his players had created enough opportunities to win but criticised their reaction after conceding, suggesting that emotions affected their decision-making when there was still time to recover.
Reports have also suggested that Cardoso's position could be under threat following the early elimination. He reportedly received an email from the club chairman requesting a meeting, although Sundowns have not officially confirmed that his departure is imminent.
Cardoso has urged his players to move forward and concentrate on the remaining competitions. Sundowns must now respond positively to the setback as pressure mounts on the team to deliver silverware this season.
