Kaizer Chiefs continued their impressive start to the DStv Diski Challenge season with a convincing 4-0 victory over Marumo Gallants, while Mamelodi Sundowns also collected three points after beating TS Galaxy 2-1. Orlando Pirates, meanwhile, dropped points for the third consecutive match after drawing 1-1 against Kruger United.
Chiefs have established themselves as early favourites in the reserve league after winning all four of their opening matches. The latest victory saw Vela Khumalo’s team strengthen their position at the top of the standings with 12 points.
Keitumetse Lesia opened the scoring for Amakhosi in the 13th minute before Tashiel Rugunanan doubled their advantage with an impressive free-kick in the 31st minute. Chiefs went into the break with a comfortable lead and continued their attacking performance after the restart.
Steven Mendes extended the advantage to 3-0 in the 50th minute, putting the home side in a strong position to secure another victory. Lesia then completed his brace to make it four goals for Chiefs and seal a convincing result against Gallants.
The victory kept Chiefs at the top of the standings, two points ahead of second-placed Sekhukhune United, who also enjoyed a successful weekend after beating Chippa United 4-1.
Mamelodi Sundowns also secured maximum points after defeating TS Galaxy 2-1. Simphiwe Mlondo gave the Brazilians the lead in the 30th minute, but Galaxy responded through Siyanda Xulu nine minutes later to make it 1-1.
The match remained competitive until Mlondo scored his second goal of the afternoon in the 68th minute. His brace proved decisive as Sundowns claimed all three points against Galaxy.
Orlando Pirates, however, continued to struggle to find consistency in the competition. The defending champions were held to a 1-1 draw by Kruger United after taking the lead in the match. The result extended their run to three consecutive draws, leaving them with more work to do if they want to challenge for the title.
Elsewhere, Polokwane City defeated AmaZulu 2-1, while Golden Arrows recorded a narrow 1-0 victory over Richards Bay. Stellenbosch FC and Siwelele played out a goalless draw.
With Chiefs maintaining their perfect record and Sundowns also collecting important points, the competition remains open. Pirates will need to turn their recent draws into victories if they hope to defend their title successfully.
