Naturena: Mshini returns as Da Cruz makes important Chiefs squad decision
Kaizer Chiefs have received a welcome boost ahead of their Carling Knockout Cup quarter-final encounter against Siwelele FC, with midfielder Nkosingiphile Ngcobo returning to the first-team squad for the first time since August.
The attacking midfielder, affectionately known as Mshini by Amakhosi supporters, has been included in the squad after spending several months away from the matchday selection.
His return will undoubtedly attract attention among Chiefs supporters, particularly considering the questions surrounding his limited involvement under head coach Fernando Da Cruz this season.
Ngcobo is one of the technically gifted players at Naturena, having developed through the club's youth structures before establishing himself in the senior team. His creativity, ball control and ability to operate in attacking midfield have made him a popular figure among the club's faithful.
However, opportunities have been difficult to secure this campaign, with competition for places becoming increasingly intense.
Da Cruz previously addressed the midfielder's situation, explaining that Ngcobo was competing with Mduduzi Shabalala and Mfundo Vilakazi for opportunities in similar positions.
The French tactician insisted that there was no personal issue involving the midfielder and encouraged him to remain motivated while continuing to work hard in training.
"Mshini" had managed just two competitive appearances for Amakhosi this season before his latest return to the squad. His previous involvement included an appearance against Golden Arrows in the MTN8 quarter-finals and a brief outing against Kruger United in the Betway Premiership.
His absence had naturally generated questions among supporters, especially those who believe his technical qualities could provide the team with another dimension in the final third.
The timing of his return is particularly interesting as Chiefs prepare for an important Carling Knockout quarter-final against Siwelele FC at the Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane.
Amakhosi enter the encounter under pressure to deliver a positive result following their disappointing 2-1 Soweto Derby defeat against Orlando Pirates.
Da Cruz will be hoping to guide his team into the semi-finals, knowing that another setback could increase scrutiny surrounding his position.
Ngcobo's inclusion gives the coach another option in midfield, although his return to the squad does not automatically guarantee a place in the starting line-up.
The midfielder will need to take advantage of any opportunity presented to him as he attempts to rebuild his position within the team.
For Chiefs supporters, however, seeing Mshini back in contention will be encouraging news.
The big question now is whether Da Cruz will give the talented midfielder an opportunity to demonstrate what he can offer as Amakhosi pursue a place in the Carling Knockout semi-finals.
