Bafana Bafana head coach Pitso Mosimane has come under scrutiny following his decision to leave Orlando Pirates midfielder Thapelo Mokobodi out of his latest 27-man squad for South Africa's upcoming 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers against Kenya.

Mokobodi's omission has sparked debate among football supporters, particularly given his impressive performances for Orlando Pirates during the 2026/27 Betway Premiership campaign. The 23-year-old has established himself as one of the Buccaneers' most influential midfielders since joining the club, making an immediate impact with his energy, creativity and ability to influence matches.

The former Stellenbosch and Marumo Gallants midfielder has registered four league assists, placing him among the joint-leading players in the Premiership standings. He has also collected three Man of the Match awards, including an outstanding performance in Pirates' Soweto Derby victory over Kaizer Chiefs, where he provided two assists.

His performances have earned praise from Pirates head coach Abdeslam Ouaddou, who described him as one of the best midfielders in the country and predicted a bright future for the youngster.

Mosimane's decision has raised further questions because of his recent explanation for selecting Mamelodi Sundowns forward Siyanda Ndlovu. The Bafana coach defended Ndlovu's inclusion by pointing to his impressive performances and multiple Man of the Match awards.

However, Mokobodi's statistics have led supporters to question why similar consideration was not given to the Pirates midfielder.

Instead, Mosimane selected Teboho Mokoena, Thalente Mbatha, Sphephelo Sithole, Bathusi Aubaas and Brooklyn Poggenpoel as his midfield options.

For Mokobodi, the omission is a disappointing moment in what has otherwise been a breakthrough season. His consistency, work rate and growing influence at Pirates suggest that he could become an important option for the national team.

Nevertheless, Mosimane will hope his selected players deliver positive results against Kenya, while Mokobodi will have to continue performing at club level to strengthen his chances of earning a maiden Bafana Bafana call-up.
