In-form AmaZulu book Carling Knockout last 8 berth

AmaZulu booked their place in the Carling Knockout quarter-finals with a hard-fought 1-0 win over Kruger United at Mbombela Stadium on Sunday afternoon. A second-half penalty from substitute Hendrick Ekstein proved enough to send the in-form visitors through to the last eight of the competition.

Usuthu arrived in Nelspruit on the back of four straight league victories and looked sharp from the start. They nearly took the lead early when defender Taariq Fielies met a corner and tried an audacious back-heel that flew just wide. Minutes later, Mlondi Mbanjwa rose to meet a cross and forced a good save from Kruger goalkeeper Marcel Dandjinou. Athini Maqokolo also went close after a neat cut-back, but he steered his effort over the bar from close range.

Kruger, who had returned to winning ways with a victory over Chippa United the previous weekend, grew into the game. Former AmaZulu man Celimpilo Ngema tested Olwethu Mzimela with a free-kick just outside the area, but the goalkeeper dealt with it comfortably. The sides went into half-time level, with AmaZulu having created the clearer openings while Kruger showed they could be dangerous on the break.

Coach Arthur Zwane made a key change after the break, bringing on experienced midfielder Hendrick Ekstein in place of top scorer Thandolwenkosi Ngwenya. The move paid off in the 75th minute when Kruger defender Tatenda Tavengwa handled the ball inside the penalty area. Ekstein stepped up and calmly sent the spot-kick into the net to give Usuthu the lead.

Kruger pushed hard for an equaliser in the closing stages. In the first minute of added time, Lesedi Kapinga unleashed a powerful strike that looked certain to level the scores, but Mzimela produced a brilliant save to tip it over the bar. AmaZulu held on to secure the victory and extend their winning run to five matches.

The result means Usuthu join the likes of Golden Arrows and Siwelele in the quarter-finals of the Carling Knockout. With their strong league form continuing into the cup, AmaZulu will now look to go even further in the competition as they chase silverware this season. Kruger, meanwhile, will reflect on a spirited display in their first campaign at the top level and focus on building more consistency in the Betway Premiership.
