Cardoso Speaks Out on CAF Champions League Rules as Sundowns Chase Another Title
Mamelodi Sundowns head coach Miguel Cardoso has shared his views on the CAF Champions League format, insisting that clubs must respect the competition's regulations as they pursue continental success.
Despite winning last season's tournament, Sundowns must still navigate the preliminary rounds as they begin their title defence. The Brazilians face Angolan side Williete SC, with progression to the group stages remaining their immediate priority.
The format differs from the UEFA Champions League, where defending champions are guaranteed a place in the league phase without having to qualify through preliminary rounds. This difference has raised questions about why African champions must still compete in qualifying matches after winning the previous edition.
Cardoso, however, believes teams should concentrate on understanding and preparing for the rules rather than questioning the system. He referred to Spanish coach Juanma Lillo, who previously worked as an assistant to Pep Guardiola, highlighting the importance of accepting football regulations.
The Portuguese tactician also pointed to South African competitions, including the MTN8, Carling Knockout and Nedbank Cup, which each have different qualification requirements and formats.
His message suggests that Sundowns must adapt to the conditions governing African football and focus on delivering results rather than becoming distracted by comparisons with European competitions.
The Tshwane giants are determined to overcome Williete SC and secure their place in the Champions League group stages as they target another successful continental campaign.
Meanwhile, former Sundowns and Bafana Bafana midfielder Bongani Zungu has attracted attention after appearing on a billboard in India representing Tornado, a company sponsoring the Super League Kerala.
Zungu's appearance highlights the growing international visibility of South African footballers. His association with the Indian football market offers another opportunity to expand his profile beyond his home country.
While Sundowns concentrate on their continental ambitions, Zungu's recognition abroad demonstrates how South African football personalities continue to build connections with the international sporting community.
