Gavin Hunt Shares His Thoughts After Stellenbosch Victory

Gavin Hunt Opens Up After Stellenbosch Victory as He Sends Heartfelt Message to Grobler

Stellenbosch FC head coach Gavin Hunt has reflected on his team's hard-fought 2-0 victory over Durban City in the Carling Knockout Cup while offering heartfelt support to striker Bradley Grobler following the passing of his father, Les Grobler.

The Western Cape outfit secured their place in the quarter-finals after defeating Durban City at Chatsworth Stadium on Wednesday night, October 28, 2026. However, beyond the result, the occasion carried an emotional significance following the sad news of Les Grobler's passing.

The former Moroka Swallows striker was a respected figure in South African football, and his death has prompted tributes from across the football fraternity.

Bradley Grobler was absent from the match as he was granted compassionate leave to mourn his father. Hunt, who has known the experienced striker for many years, made it clear that the club would stand behind him during this difficult period.

The Stellenbosch coach also revealed his personal connection to the Grobler family, explaining that he knew Les well after facing him during their playing days.

Hunt expressed his sympathy for Bradley and his family, emphasising the importance of allowing the striker sufficient time to grieve. The coach also reflected on his own experience of losing his father, which helped him understand the emotional challenges that accompany such a painful moment.

His message demonstrated that, while football remains competitive, the welfare of players and their families must always come first.

On the pitch, Stellenbosch had to remain patient before finding a breakthrough against a determined Durban City side.

The opening half produced few clear-cut opportunities, with both teams struggling to create the decisive moment. Durban City threatened after the restart, but Stellenbosch gradually increased the pressure as the contest approached its closing stages.

Sinoxolo Kwayiba eventually broke the deadlock in the 84th minute, finishing a delivery from substitute Kazeem Adeyanju. The forward then struck again in stoppage time, with Adeyanju providing another assist to secure the 2-0 victory.

The result ended a run of three consecutive draws between the two sides and booked Stellenbosch a place in the last eight.

Hunt's team will now turn its attention to the quarter-final clash against AmaZulu FC as it continues its pursuit of another Carling Knockout title.

Stellenbosch previously lifted the competition in 2023, and the latest victory keeps their hopes of another memorable cup campaign alive.

Nevertheless, the emotional message surrounding Bradley Grobler remains an important part of the story. As the striker mourns his father, Hunt and Stellenbosch have made their support clear, reinforcing the human side of football beyond the results and trophies.
