Kwanele Kopo, the former head coach of the University of Pretoria, has talked about how he helped Orlando Pirates striker Oswin Appollis resurrect his football career after the gifted attacker thought about quitting the sport.
Since then, Appollis has developed into one of South Africa's most dynamic football players, receiving praise for both his club and international achievements. However, he went through a challenging time after leaving SuperSport United, so his ascent to the top was not always simple.
When Appollis was a member of Ajax Cape Town's youth structures, Kopo was a member of the technical team that recognised him. The coaches were impressed by the young player and thought he may go through SuperSport United's academy and eventually make his senior team debut.
After Appollis was promoted to the first team, his circumstances were altered by the arrival of new coaches who adopted a different style of play. After being deemed surplus to requirements, he was eventually freed.
Appollis found it difficult to return to professional football after leaving. Kopo claims that prior to their reunion at Pretoria Callies, the attacker was absent from the game for more than 18 months.
Kopo clarified that it was difficult to persuade Appollis to come back because the player had lost motivation and had initially rejected the idea of another chance.
Before finally getting in touch with his mother, the coach kept in touch with him for weeks. He assured Appollis that he could go back to Cape Town if he went back to playing football and didn't get a professional contract within a season.
Additionally, Kopo clarified that the financial benefits at Pretoria Callies would be minimal, stating that the primary goal was to assist the young player in re-establishing his career.
Appollis eventually regained his confidence and made his way back into the professional game, thus that choice turned out to be vital.
Oswin Appollis, a forward for the Orlando Pirates, has explained why his attempt to join FC Porto last season failed. The Portuguese powerhouses expressed interest in the player, but their inability to match Pirates' asking price caused the transaction to fall through. Appollis maintains that he has moved on from the issue. "Right now I'm focusing on winning trophies with Orlando Pirates," he stated. The attacker stated that he is still open to new chances and that he may eventually receive offers from other European teams.
Since joining the Orlando Pirates, Appollis has continued to showcase his abilities, making an impact as an offensive option and adding goals and assists.
His standing in the Bafana Bafana setup has also been reinforced by his performances. In a 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying match, South Africa defeated Eritrea 5-0 thanks to three assists from the forward.
His development shows how crucial it may be for a young football player to have the proper assistance and another chance. Appollis was able to find his talent and pursue his goals because to Kopo's perseverance in getting him back into the game.
With Pirates vying for big awards and Appollis garnering notice, the forward will look to sustain his form and assist the team in achieving its goals while maintaining his aspirations to play in Europe.
