Orlando Pirates head coach Abdeslam Ouaddou has explained why winger Oswin Appollis has recently found himself on the bench, using Paris Saint-Germain manager Luis Enrique's approach to player management as an example.
The Moroccan tactician insists that decisions involving Appollis are influenced by the need to manage the player's workload and protect him from possible injuries as the Buccaneers continue their demanding campaign.
Speaking to SuperSport TV, Ouaddou pointed to how top European clubs manage their important players, explaining that even footballers who are performing well may need to be rested to avoid physical problems.
He specifically mentioned PSG and their Moroccan defender Achraf Hakimi, referring to comments attributed to Luis Enrique about managing the player's involvement because of the injury risk associated with his workload.
"I have already explained the situation of Appollis. You see in Paris Saint-Germain now, Luis Enrique said he is going to play Hakimi in January, why? Because they've seen with the numbers that this guy risks injuries and they don't want to lose him," Ouaddou explained.
The Pirates coach's comparison suggests that leaving Appollis out of the starting line-up should not automatically be interpreted as a punishment or a sign that the winger has fallen out of favour.
Appollis has become an important attacking option for the Buccaneers, and his contribution makes his availability valuable to the team. However, Ouaddou appears keen to ensure that the player is managed carefully rather than being exposed to an excessive workload.
Modern football places significant demands on players, particularly those who regularly feature in several competitions. Coaches must therefore balance the desire to field their strongest possible team with the responsibility of keeping key players fit throughout the season.
For Pirates supporters, Ouaddou's explanation offers a different perspective on Appollis' recent absence from the starting XI. The decision, according to the coach's reasoning, is about protecting an important player and ensuring he remains available when the team needs him most.
The Buccaneers will hope that the approach helps Appollis maintain his fitness and continue contributing to their ambitions across all competitions.
