BAD NEWS FOR CHIEFS SUPPORTERS: SABC Left Without Broadcast Link for Crucial CAFCC Clash

JOHANNESBURG — Kaizer Chiefs supporters hoping to watch their team's CAF Confederation Cup opener against Red Arrows were left disappointed after the club confirmed the match would not be televised in South Africa. The Soweto giants announced just hours before kick-off that the Zambian hosts had failed to provide SABC with the necessary broadcast link to carry the first leg from Ndola .

The statement from the club was blunt. "This afternoon's CAF Confederation Cup clash against Red Arrows FC will not be televised in South Africa. Unfortunately, the hosting team has been unable to provide our broadcasters, SABC with the necessary link to air the match in Mzansi," Chiefs said . The club also confirmed there would be no live-streaming alternative, leaving fans with no official video access to the match .

For a club of Chiefs' stature, the blackout struck a nerve. The intended broadcaster, SABC, had been expected to carry the game, but the technical failure on the Zambian side left South African viewers in the dark . Supporters unable to travel to Levy Mwanawasa Stadium were forced to rely on the club's social media updates on X, described as "coverage and key moments" rather than a promised live stream .

The timing compounded the frustration. Chiefs entered the tie seeking a positive result to take into the second leg at Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban on 23 October, with a place in the group stages at stake . Instead, the team's continental campaign began out of sight for its home audience, a stark contrast to the free-to-air access South African football fans typically expect for major club fixtures .

The blackout also reignited uncomfortable questions about the club's current standing. Some supporters on social media suggested the SABC's failure to secure the link reflected a broader decline in the Chiefs brand, with one comment noting that "in the past, SABC would have fought to broadcast Kaizer Chiefs games" . Whether that criticism is fair or not, the immediate reality is unchanged: Amakhosi's crucial away leg unfolded before an audience that, back home, could only follow it through text updates and second-hand reports.
