Motaung Explains Why Da Cruz Will Not Leave Chiefs

Kaizer Chiefs were eliminated from the CAF Confederation Cup after a penalty shootout defeat to Red Arrows, losing 3-2 in the second leg of the preliminary round at Moses Mabhida Stadium on Friday.

Amakhosi entered the match seeking to overturn a 1-0 aggregate deficit from their prior loss in Ndola, Zambia. They equalized the tie thanks to a goal by Bradley Cross but couldn't secure another goal to clinch their advancement, ultimately falling in the shootout.

The Chiefs began the game with an aggressive strategy, aiming to score quickly and exert pressure on their opponents. They advanced whenever they seized possession, eager to find a goal that would enhance their chances of progressing.

However, this offensive mindset left them susceptible to counterattacks by the Zambian team. While Red Arrows aimed to capitalize on any turnovers, they struggled to create clear chances in the early moments.

In the 11th minute, Chiefs almost took the lead when Thulani Mabaso found space in the box, but Red Arrows goalkeeper Charles Kalumba made a crucial save to keep the score even.

Fernando Da Cruz’s squad maintained their offensive efforts, yet they struggled to penetrate the visitors' solid defense. Red Arrows also tried to generate scoring opportunities, but neither team managed to score before halftime.

The Chiefs returned for the second half with renewed vigor, persistently looking for the goal to level the aggregate score. Pule Mmodi came close in the 62nd minute with a quick attempt, but once again, Kalumba stopped him.

Finally, in the 66th minute, Chiefs found success. Cross headed the ball into the net, bringing the aggregate score to 1-1 and igniting hope among the home fans for progression.

In the closing moments, Amakhosi pushed for a second goal. Shabalala had two clear chances to secure victory, but couldn't convert either opportunity.

With the aggregate score still tied, the match proceeded to penalties, where Red Arrows outperformed Chiefs, winning 3-2 and ending their tournament run.

This elimination has sparked concerns about the team's performance; however, Chiefs football manager Bobby Motaung has expressed support for head coach Fernando Da Cruz, despite the team’s exit from the CAF Confederation Cup.

Motaung emphasized that Da Cruz would remain in his role, noting that even top-tier teams like Mamelodi Sundowns have faced exits from competitions despite significant investments in talent. He remarked that winning and losing are integral to football and suggested that a coaching change should not result from a single unsatisfactory outcome.

This support suggests that Chiefs are committed to allowing Da Cruz to continue his work following this setback. The coach must now focus on enhancing the team's performance and assisting players in recovering from a disappointing evening in Durban.

For Chiefs fans, the immediate disappointment will linger, especially after the team’s comeback to level the tie and their missed opportunities to win before penalties. Nonetheless, the club must shift its focus to upcoming domestic matches and aim for more consistent results.
