Orlando Pirates have received a major vote of confidence from Baba Mthethwa, who believes the Buccaneers have what it takes to win the CAF Champions League and bring continental glory to the club.
Mthethwa believes Pirates have the quality to compete for Africa’s biggest club football trophy, but he has also reminded the Soweto giants that playing attractive football and coming close to winning are not enough. According to him, the ultimate goal must be to lift silverware.
Orlando Pirates have continued to attract attention because of their playing style and ambitions on the continental stage. Their supporters will be hoping the team can turn its potential into success by going all the way in the competition.
Speaking about Pirates’ chances, Mthethwa expressed confidence in the team and highlighted the importance of finishing the job when opportunities arise.
“Orlando Pirates can win the CAF Champions League. They know that you can go close, but close is not good enough. You need to go over the line,” he said.
His comments reflect the expectations surrounding a club with a proud history in African football. Pirates won the CAF Champions League in 1995, and their supporters continue to dream of seeing the Buccaneers return to the top of the continent.
Mthethwa also praised the team’s football, describing the new-look Pirates side as one that plays refreshing football. However, he stressed that good performances must eventually produce trophies if the club wants to satisfy its supporters.
“They have a new team that plays refreshing football, but that’s not enough. What matters most is silverware,” he added.
The possibility of an all-South African CAF Champions League final also caught Mthethwa’s attention. He expressed hope that Orlando Pirates could meet Mamelodi Sundowns in the final, creating a major showdown between two of the country’s biggest clubs.
“Let’s hope Orlando Pirates will go all the way this time and maybe play Mamelodi Sundowns in the final. It’s possible. It’s up to the two teams,” he said.
Such a final would attract considerable attention from South African football supporters, with both clubs seeking to establish themselves among Africa’s leading teams.
For Pirates, the challenge is to turn belief into results and maintain consistency throughout the competition. Mthethwa has made his position clear: he believes the Buccaneers can win the trophy, but they must prove it on the pitch.
Pirates supporters will now be hoping their team can fulfil that ambition and bring the CAF Champions League trophy back to Soweto.
