Mamelodi Sundowns head coach Miguel Cardoso has warned his players against complacency as they prepare to face Angolan side Williete SC in the second leg of their CAF Champions League preliminary-round encounter on Friday.
The Brazilians are determined to secure qualification for the group stages as they continue their quest to defend the continental title they won last season. However, Cardoso has stressed that his team must remain focused and approach the decisive encounter with the seriousness it deserves.
Despite Sundowns entering the return leg with a favourable result from the first meeting in Angola, the Portuguese tactician believes their qualification is far from guaranteed. He pointed to the challenges posed by Angolan opposition, recalling the club's previous elimination by Petro de Luanda as a reminder of how difficult such encounters can be.
Cardoso also highlighted Williete's position in Angolan football and their defensive capabilities, warning that Sundowns cannot afford to underestimate their opponents. He explained that the Champions League presents different challenges from domestic competitions, requiring greater concentration, discipline and determination.
The Sundowns coach further emphasised the importance of selecting the right starting lineup, insisting that every player must be prepared to contribute towards securing the desired result. He maintained that qualification must be earned on the pitch rather than assumed before the final whistle.
Defender Thapelo Morena echoed his coach's sentiments, acknowledging the importance of Friday's encounter. He indicated that the team must focus on the upcoming match rather than dwell on what happened during their previous outing in Angola.
Meanwhile, Sundowns are also dealing with a reported financial dispute involving former forward Lucas Ribeiro. The Brazilian-born attacker has reportedly requested 24 months to pay R66 million demanded by the club, claiming he cannot afford the full amount immediately. FIFA has reportedly given him 45 days to settle the payment, with an extension request said to have been rejected by Sundowns. The possible consequences remain unclear.
For now, Cardoso and his players must concentrate on overcoming Williete and securing their place in the Champions League group stages.
