Gerald Guther Praises Orlando Pirates’ Class After African Stars’ 5-0 Aggregate Defeat

African Stars head coach Gerald Güther has praised Orlando Pirates for their quality, experience and composure after his team suffered a 4-0 defeat in the second leg of their CAF Champions League qualifying tie on Friday night.

The victory at Orlando Amstel Arena secured a convincing 5-0 aggregate triumph for the Buccaneers, confirming their qualification for the Champions League group stage and bringing the Namibian side's continental campaign to an end.

Despite the disappointing result, Güther acknowledged that Pirates demonstrated why they are among the teams capable of making a strong impression in African football. The coach admitted that his players struggled to match the hosts' intensity and confidence, particularly during the opening stages, when defensive mistakes allowed the South African giants to establish control.

Reflecting on the encounter, Güther described Pirates as a classy team and admitted that his side had been unable to produce the performance required to challenge their opponents effectively.

"We saw that tonight we lost the game against a classy team. Not the result that we obviously wanted," he said.

The African Stars coach explained that Pirates' movement, technical ability and experience in continental competitions made a significant difference. He believes his players lacked the composure needed to cope with the pressure, allowing the Buccaneers to dictate the tempo and exploit opportunities.

However, Güther insisted that the defeat could provide valuable lessons for his squad as they continue developing and gaining experience at the highest level.

"Lessons learned, definitely," he added, acknowledging the benefits of competing against an established club with Pirates' continental pedigree.

Güther also backed Orlando Pirates to progress further in the competition, praising their tactical organisation, playing philosophy and energy. He believes the Buccaneers have the qualities needed to challenge stronger opponents as the tournament advances.

"If they keep their style of play, their system, and their energy, I foresee them to go quite far in this Champions League," he said.

Meanwhile, Pirates will turn their attention to the group stage, where tougher challenges await Abdeslam Ouaddou's men. African Stars must now refocus on domestic football, using the experience to improve their competitiveness in future continental campaigns.
