Orlando Pirates head coach Abdeslam Ouaddou came close to matching one of the club’s significant historical records after moving to within one match of equalling the longest unbeaten run achieved by a single coach at the Soweto giants.

According to OptaJabu, Ouaddou was just one game away from matching the milestone set by former Pirates coach Milutin Sredojević. Although the Moroccan tactician narrowly missed the opportunity to equal the record, his impressive run has highlighted the progress made under his leadership.

The achievement has attracted attention among Pirates supporters, with the Buccaneers continuing to compete in domestic competitions while aiming to maintain their position among South Africa’s leading football clubs.

Extending an unbeaten run is never an easy task, particularly at a club of Pirates’ stature, where expectations remain high. Coaches must ensure tactical discipline, consistency and effective squad management while preparing their teams to face different opponents and playing styles.

Ouaddou’s achievement is particularly notable because maintaining such a sequence requires contributions from the entire squad. Players must remain focused throughout matches, minimise costly mistakes and take advantage of scoring opportunities to secure positive results.

Meanwhile, Sredojević’s record continues to represent an important benchmark in Orlando Pirates’ coaching history. Matching such an achievement would have further strengthened Ouaddou’s growing reputation among supporters.

Despite falling short of the milestone, the Pirates coach will now turn his attention to the club’s upcoming fixtures as he seeks to maintain competitive performances and guide the team towards its season objectives.

For the Buccaneers, the ultimate priority remains challenging for major honours and delivering consistent results across competitions. While individual records provide an indication of progress, winning trophies remains the most important measure of success.

Ouaddou’s near miss has nevertheless added another talking point to Pirates’ history, with supporters eager to see whether he can establish further milestones during his tenure.
