Kaizer Chiefs Ladies have missed out on a place in the promotional playoffs despite ending their inaugural campaign in the SAFA Women’s Provincial League with a 1-0 victory over UJ Ladies on Saturday.
Amakhosazana did their part by securing all three points at the Naturena Village, but the result was not enough to secure a place in the promotional playoffs. Wits University Ladies won the race for the second position after beating JVW Ladies 2-0 at Sturrock Park.
Chiefs Ladies finished their first campaign on a positive note thanks to a goal from Refilwe Maseko, who helped the team defeat fourth-placed UJ Ladies. The victory extended their impressive unbeaten run to 16 matches, during which they recorded 15 wins.
Despite their excellent form, Chiefs could not finish ahead of Wits University in the final standings. The Johannesburg side needed other results to go their way, but Wits made sure of their place in the promotional playoffs with their victory over JVW.
The outcome will be disappointing for Chiefs, who showed significant progress during their first season in the competition. Their strong run of results demonstrated that they could compete for promotion, but they ultimately fell short of their objective.
Mamelodi Sundowns’ reserve team finished at the top of the standings after beating Mito Stars Ladies 4-0 in their final match. However, Sundowns B are not eligible for promotion because the club’s senior team already competes in the Hollywoodbets Super League.
Sundowns ended the campaign with 73 points, one point ahead of Wits University, who finished second with 72 points. Chiefs Ladies completed their inaugural season in third place with 70 points.
The final standings meant that Wits secured the opportunity to compete in the promotional playoffs, while Chiefs were left to reflect on a campaign that ended with a victory but without the reward they had hoped for.
Although missing out on promotion will be a setback, Chiefs Ladies can take encouragement from their impressive finish to the season. Their 16-game unbeaten run and 15 victories during that period provide a strong foundation as they look to build on their progress in the next campaign.
For now, Wits University will focus on the promotional playoffs and the chance to earn a place in the top division of South African women’s football.
