Dortmund Steals the Show from South Africa, Despite Aden McCarthy's Impressive Goal for Kaizer Chiefs in the Champions League
Former Kaizer Chiefs midfielder Aden McCarthy gave South African football fans cause to celebrate on Tuesday, October 20, 2026, when he scored his first goal for Sabah FK in the UEFA Champions League against German powerhouses Borussia Dortmund. Despite the defender's iconic performance, his team still lost by a razor-thin margin of 2-1.
After Serhou Guirassy put Dortmund ahead, McCarthy scored for Sabah in the 39th minute to pull them level. A hard-fought match in Baku, Azerbaijan, ended with the visitors claiming all three points, despite a superb performance by the South African.
The goal was a watershed moment in McCarthy's career on the largest platform in European sport. The match also gave South African fans a chance to witness a player who had played for Kaizer Chiefs before make an impression on one of Germany's most famous teams.
Sabah proved they were not going down without a struggle, despite Dortmund's plenty of European experience coming into the match.
The early goal by German forward Guirassy placed the hosts under pressure to find an equaliser. Following a free kick from the right by Tymoteusz Puchacz, Sabah persisted in their pursuit of an equaliser, and McCarthy climbed highest to meet the delivery.
The defender gave the home crowd something to remember as he guided a header past Dortmund custodian Gregor Kobel, levelling the score at 1-1.
Since McCarthy's opponents were accustomed to playing at the greatest level of European football, their goal was all the more impressive. He proved he could play a key role in the game from defence by scoring in a match like this.
As a result of his play, South African football fans now have even more cause to watch his international career.
Sabah's joy was fleeting, though, for Dortmund came out of halftime intent on taking the lead again.
In the 53rd minute, Guirassy scored his second goal, putting Dortmund back on front and ending the match at 2-1. Despite Sabah's best attempts to rally, the Bundesliga team were able to hold on for the win thanks to the striker's brace.
