Durban City has advanced to the group stages of the CAF Confederation Cup after triumphing 3-0 over AS Port-Louis 2000 in Mauritius on Sunday, resulting in a commanding 6-1 aggregate win. This achievement marks a significant milestone for the club, as it is their first foray into continental competition.
Having only joined the top flight two seasons ago and following their Nedbank Cup victory last season, this accomplishment is a remarkable feat for Durban City. With an advantage from the first leg, coach Eric Tinkler’s side demonstrated their strength in the return match, successfully sealing the win while maintaining a clean sheet.
Gaston Sirino started the scoring in the 12th minute, building on his performance from the first leg and setting a positive tone for the match. Haashim Domingo then doubled the lead in the 25th minute, putting Durban City in a solid position as Port-Louis struggled to recover.
At halftime, Durban City enjoyed a two-goal lead for the match and a comfortable aggregate edge. Their disciplined play enabled them to maintain control as they moved closer to qualification.
After the break, they maintained their momentum, with Ethan Brooks, who replaced Sirino, scoring in the 52nd minute to extend the lead to 3-0. This goal capped off a dominant performance and increased their aggregate lead to five goals.
Previously, Durban City showcased their ability by eliminating Burundi's Rukinzo, while AS Port-Louis advanced after overcoming Botswana's Jwaneng Galaxy.
Now, Tinkler and his squad await the draw for the CAF Confederation Cup group stages, which will determine their upcoming opponents. For Durban City, reaching this stage signifies another major milestone following their Nedbank Cup victory, and their strong two-legged performances have set a promising foundation for their first continental campaign as they aim to compete against some of Africa's top clubs.
