Cape Town City’s impressive winning run in the Motsepe Foundation Championship came to an end on Saturday afternoon after they were held to a 1-1 draw by Upington City at the Mxolisi Dicky Jacobs Stadium.
The Citizens travelled to the Northern Cape hoping to extend their recent run of victories, but had to settle for a point after the hosts fought back to secure a share of the spoils.
Cape Town City took the lead in the 56th minute when Therlo Moosa found the back of the net following an assist from Francis. The visitors appeared to be on course for another important victory before Upington City produced a late response.
Neo Dikgale restored parity for the hosts with approximately 10 minutes remaining, ensuring that neither side left the encounter empty-handed.
The result ended Cape Town City's four-match winning streak, although the point was enough to keep them at the top of the Championship standings.
The Citizens finished the round level on 21 points with second-placed Magesi FC, who also dropped points after playing to a 1-1 draw against ORBIT College. Cape Town City retained first place by virtue of having scored more goals, with both teams boasting a goal difference of plus seven.
However, the promotion race has become increasingly competitive, with Lerumo Lions, Hope FC and Real Native all moving onto 20 points following victories on Saturday.
Lerumo Lions defeated Midlands Wanderers 2-1, Hope FC secured a late 1-0 win over Hungry Lions, while Real Native beat Leicesterford City 2-0.
With only one point separating the top five teams, the battle for promotion to the Betway Premiership is becoming increasingly intense.
