Swallows Supporters Call for Meeting With Walter Mokoena

Moroka Swallows supporter Bafana "Congo" Malekutu has voiced concern and surprise over the recent developments around the revival of the historic Soweto club. He says supporters want to be properly informed about the plans for their team.

South African broadcaster and businessman Walter Mokoena has taken over the process of reviving the club and introduced a new identity, Moroka Swallows SC. The move has drawn attention as the club looks to return to competitive football after a difficult period. The Dube Birds have been out of top-flight football since selling their Premier Soccer League status to Marumo Gallants in 2024 because of serious financial problems. The club recently celebrated its 79th anniversary and has a long history in South African football, with fans who want to see it return to its former position.

Mokoena is working with club legend Joel "Ace" Mnini to bring Swallows back through the lower divisions. Malekutu, however, says the news caught him off guard because he did not know the new team existed. He first heard about Moroka Swallows SC last Friday, when people started calling him to ask if he would go with them to a match at Milpark. "I was surprised because I never knew there was a Moroka Swallows in the lower divisions," he said.

He added that the only Swallows side he knew of was the Legends team, which includes former players such as Steve Sekano and Lefa Tsutsulupa. He also said he knows the leadership of the Bring Back The Birds Campaign. According to Malekutu, the supporters' leadership is arranging a meeting with Mokoena this week to discuss the situation and get more information about the revival plans.

He welcomed the possibility of seeing the club return, but said the people behind the project should speak to supporters and follow the correct channels. In his view, fans should not have to rely on media reports to learn about important developments involving their own club. He said the situation is causing confusion, but supporters are ready to back anyone who genuinely wants to restore Moroka Swallows.

Malekutu also warned that supporters do not want two clubs using the same name and identity in South Africa. He said they understand the original club's certificate is in someone else's possession, which makes things more complicated. For supporters, he said, the main priority is to see the original Moroka Swallows restored and protected, with no doubt over the club's identity.
