Pitso Mosimane Names 38-Man Bafana Squad for Kenya Qualifiers as New Faces Feature

According to reports, South Africa's head coach Pitso Mosimane has chosen 38 players to be considered for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifying matches against Kenya in November.

Mosimane has a wide range of options at his disposal with the preliminary selection as he continues to shape the national team after returning to coaching. Because of the anticipated reduction in the size of the final squad, players named on the provisional list will still have the opportunity to qualify for the tournament.

A number of well-known players are on the roster, including goalkeeper and captain Ronwen Williams, forward Oswin Appollis of Orlando Pirates, midfielder Themba Zwane of Mamelodi Sundowns, and striker Iqraam Rayners of Mamelodi Sundowns.

Luther Singh, Thapelo Morena, Relebohile Mofokeng, Teboho Mokoena, and Lyle Foster are among the other players on the roster. The variety of options accessible to the coach is reflected in the group, which also includes younger players and footballers based abroad.

Among the clubs represented are Mamelodi Sundowns and Orlando Pirates. Players are also attached to teams in the US and Europe. Among them are Sphephelo Sithole of Tondela, Portugal, Ime Okon of Hannover 96, Germany, Luke Le Roux of Cercle Brugge, Belgium, and Mbekezeli Mbokazi of Chicago Fire, USA.

Players who have garnered attention during Mosimane's rebuilding of the national team, such as Brooklyn Poggenpoel of Durban City, Lebone Seema of Orlando Pirates, and Puso Dithejane of Chicago Fire, are also part of the selection.

In September 2026, with the nation preparing for their AFCON 2027 qualifying campaign, Mosimane's return to Bafana Bafana was announced. With clubs like Mamelodi Sundowns and Al Ahly, the coach has won the CAF Champions League, and he has also managed the national team.

If South Africa wants to make it to the continental tournament, they need to do well in the upcoming qualifiers. Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda are all co-hosts of the 2027 African Football Championship (AFCON), and the group's qualification route is dependent on Kenya's performance.

The 38-man roster is still in its early stages and is not yet the final matchday roster. As Mosimane gets Bafana Bafana ready for their November matches, all eyes will be on the players who make the cut.
