Real Madrid delivered a major statement in the Spanish title race after defeating Barcelona 2-1 in the first El Clasico of the 2026/27 LaLiga season at the Camp Nou on Sunday night, ending their rivals’ unbeaten start to the campaign.

The victory strengthened Madrid’s position in the title race and placed Kylian Mbappe at the centre of attention following his battle with Barcelona’s young sensation, Lamine Yamal. The highly anticipated encounter attracted enormous interest, with supporters eager to see which side would establish early dominance in one of football’s biggest rivalries.

Mbappe broke the deadlock in the 41st minute when Barcelona defender Gerard Martin attempted to clear a dangerous cross but sent the ball against the French forward and into the net. The goal gave Madrid a crucial advantage, while Barcelona missed a golden opportunity to equalise before the interval when Yamal fired wide from close range.

Barcelona returned with greater determination after the break and found their equaliser in the 61st minute. Pedri delivered an intelligent pass into Raphinha, who finished clinically to make it 1-1 and revive hopes of a comeback.

Yamal attempted to inspire Barcelona during the closing stages, creating danger with his dribbling and attacking movement. However, Madrid defended resolutely and remained dangerous on the counterattack.

The decisive moment arrived in the 87th minute. Jude Bellingham helped launch a rapid attack before Eduardo Camavinga raced into the penalty area and delivered a precise cutback. Mbappe calmly converted to score his second goal of the evening and secure all three points for Madrid.

The result ended Barcelona's perfect start to their league campaign and prevented them from winning their opening 10 matches. Despite the defeat, Hansi Flick's side remained top of the standings, while Madrid reduced the gap to three points.

For Mbappe, the brace further underlined his importance to Madrid's title ambitions. His performance proved decisive in a fiercely contested encounter, while Yamal and his Barcelona teammates were left disappointed after failing to turn their second-half pressure into victory.

The El Clasico triumph will provide Madrid with significant confidence as the season continues, while Barcelona must quickly recover from consecutive defeats across competitions.
