Joseph Mhlongo Joins Army Rocket FC: Former PSL Striker Takes on New Coaching Challenge

Former Moroka Swallows Star Joseph Mhlongo Lands Army Rocket FC Coaching Job

Former Moroka Swallows and Black Leopards striker Joseph Mhlongo has taken another important step in his football career after being appointed assistant coach at North-West ABC Motsepe League side Army Rocket FC.

The 36-year-old former professional footballer joins head coach Themba Masango's technical team as the club looks to strengthen its coaching department and improve its performances in South African football's third tier.

Army Rocket FC confirmed Mhlongo's appointment, explaining that his responsibilities would include supporting the head coach in preparing the team and improving its overall performance.

"He will work alongside the head coach to strengthen the team's technical preparation and performance," the club confirmed.

The appointment represents another opportunity for Mhlongo to put his extensive experience in professional football to good use, this time from the technical area rather than on the pitch.

Mhlongo Begins Another Chapter in Football

Mhlongo retired from professional football in 2025 after a career spanning more than a decade, during which he represented several clubs in South Africa's competitive football landscape.

His career included spells with Moroka Swallows, Black Leopards, Polokwane City, Upington City, Ubuntu Cape Town and Leruma United.

Having competed at different levels of the domestic game, the former attacker understands the demands of professional football, including the importance of discipline, tactical awareness, teamwork and consistency.

Those qualities could prove valuable as he settles into his new responsibilities at Army Rocket FC.

Mhlongo's transition into coaching began shortly after his retirement, demonstrating his determination to remain involved in the sport and contribute to the development of footballers.

His previous coaching experience at Tembisa Hollywood Thunder also provided an opportunity to begin developing his skills as a tactician.

Can Mhlongo Help Army Rocket FC Reach New Heights?

Working alongside Masango, Mhlongo will be expected to contribute ideas, assist with training sessions and help players understand the tactical demands of competitive football.

His experience as a former attacker could also benefit the club's forwards, particularly when it comes to movement, positioning, decision-making and taking advantage of scoring opportunities.

However, translating playing experience into coaching success requires patience, communication and the ability to bring an entire squad together.

Army Rocket FC will need consistency and collective effort if it hopes to achieve its ambitions in the North-West ABC Motsepe League.

Mhlongo's appointment could therefore become an important addition to the club's technical structure as the season progresses.

While his arrival does not guarantee immediate success, his knowledge of the game offers the club another resource to build upon.

For Mhlongo, the challenge is clear: transform the lessons learned throughout his playing career into practical contributions that help Army Rocket FC compete more effectively.

Could Joseph Mhlongo's experience help Army Rocket FC become a serious force in the ABC Motsepe League? Only time will tell, but his latest appointment marks another exciting chapter in his football journey.
