Hunt Warns of Tough Durban City Test as Stellenbosch Chase Carling Knockout Progress
Stellenbosch FC coach Gavin Hunt expects a difficult challenge when his side takes on Durban City in the Carling Knockout Round of 16, with the experienced tactician acknowledging the strength and quality of his former club ahead of the crucial encounter.
The Maroons travel to face Durban City on Wednesday, 28 October, aiming to secure a place in the quarter-finals and maintain their impressive record in the competition. Stellenbosch, who lifted the Carling Knockout trophy in 2023, are targeting a third consecutive quarter-final appearance as they look to remain competitive on multiple fronts this season.
However, their preparations have been complicated by an exhausting schedule that has forced them to spend considerable time away from home. The Western Cape outfit have played six of their last eight matches on the road, including a season opener staged in Durban rather than Stellenbosch.
Hunt believes Durban City will provide a stern examination, particularly given their physical presence and performances at Chatsworth Stadium.
“Durban City have done a lot of work behind the scenes getting players in, and they have a good nucleus of players. They have a lot of power and strength and, generally, their record has been good at Chatsworth, so it’s not going to be easy, that’s for sure,” Hunt said.
The veteran coach also admitted that the demanding travel schedule has presented difficulties for his relatively young squad. According to Hunt, playing away from home regularly can make it harder to give inexperienced players the opportunities they need to develop and perform consistently.
“It’s very different when you play away as opposed to playing at home, where you can give young players more of a chance and it will be easier for them. We have a young squad and playing away so often has been difficult for some of these kids,” he explained.
Despite those challenges, Hunt remains optimistic about his team's potential. He believes the players will benefit from the experience and become stronger as they continue adjusting to the demands of senior football.
The coach insists that Stellenbosch have enough quality to compete if they approach the match with the right attitude and tactical discipline.
“If we play accordingly though, we’ll have an even chance. We just need to settle our team, and once we’ve got that, I’ve got a lot of confidence in this group,” he added.
Hunt further stressed that Stellenbosch are still in the process of establishing a new identity following changes to the squad. The coach believes the team needs time to develop consistency but remains encouraged by the commitment and potential of his players.
“We’re trying to create a new culture, with a lot of new players, and I don’t even feel as though we’ve really started the season yet. We’ve played eight games so far and it’s been a tough run, but we’re positive and excited,” he said.
Durban City, meanwhile, will look to take advantage of their home conditions and use their physical strength to put Stellenbosch under pressure. With a place in the quarter-finals at stake, both teams understand the importance of delivering a strong performance.
Durban City are expected to feature Asare in goal, with Mkhize, Doumbia, Ncanana and Gcaba forming the defensive unit. Sirino, Poggenpoel and Domingo are among the players expected to contribute in midfield, while Sanger, Jurgens and Koapeng provide attacking options.
Stellenbosch are expected to start with Garrow between the posts, supported by Nkwali, Msimango, Vena and Lebitso in defence. Mashego, Blom, Du Preez and Matlou are included in the starting lineup, while Kwayiba and Plaatjies are also named in the team.
The match presents Hunt with an opportunity to guide Stellenbosch closer to another cup triumph, but Durban City will be determined to protect their home advantage and keep their own ambitions alive.
With Hunt familiar with Durban City's setup and the hosts eager to impress, the encounter promises to be a competitive battle in which concentration, tactical discipline and individual quality could ultimately determine who advances to the quarter-finals.
