Five players from Kaizer Chiefs were named to Raymond Mdaka's preliminary Under-23 squad of 37, giving the club a huge boost as they prepare to compete in South Africa's Olympic qualification campaign.
The initial selection for South Africa's second-round qualifying match against Madagascar consists of Takalani Mazhamba, Mfundo Vilakazi, Faiz Abrahams, Luke Baartman, and Langelihle Phili. The match will be played over two legs.
This is a great chance for the rising stars on the Chiefs' roster to get some international experience and solidify their position in the national team. Their inclusion further emphasizes the impact Amakhosi is having on the development of young footballers in South Africa.
Being named to the preliminary squad is no assurance of a spot on the final squad, though. Mdaka and his technical staff will need to carefully evaluate each of the 37 players in order to choose which group will play Madagascar, since there are only a certain number of spots available.
That being said, it is expected that Mazhamba, Vilakazi, Abrahams, and Baartman will make a strong impression during preparations by showcasing their consistency, discipline, and quality play. If they put on a good show, they may be able to earn a spot in the final qualifying squad.
Because the youngster is out with an injury right now, Phili's selection is all the more impressive. Please do not take his inclusion as a sign that he is fit to play or that he has fully recovered. As the technical team works to finalize their plans, his fitness will continue to be a crucial factor.
In order to advance in the Olympic qualification process, South Africa's chances of winning the match against Madagascar are paramount. With one match set to take place at Lucas Moripe Stadium in Atteridgeville, Pretoria, South Africa will have the benefit of home field advantage.
Getting all five of the Chiefs' preliminary squad members into the final selection is the team's top priority right now. For the young people involved, securing a spot would be a significant achievement in their professional journeys so far.
Now that the selection process has begun, Amakhosi fans will be keeping a careful eye on developments in the hopes that their young heroes will grasp the chance to help South Africa advance to the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles.
