Orlando Pirates head coach Abdeslam Ouaddou has defended his decision to leave winger Oswin Appollis on the bench, explaining that the move was influenced by concerns about the player's workload and risk of injury.
The Moroccan tactician used Paris Saint-Germain manager Luis Enrique as an example to explain why managing players' playing time is important, particularly during a demanding football season.
Appollis has become an important member of the Pirates squad, but Ouaddou believes that keeping him available throughout the campaign requires careful management rather than selecting him for every match.
Speaking to SuperSport TV, the Pirates coach explained that his decision was based on information gathered about the player's physical condition and the possibility of sustaining an injury.
“I have already explained the situation of Appollis, you see in Paris Saint-Germain now, Luis Enrique said he is going to play Hakimi in January, why? Because they’ve seen with the numbers that this guys, he risks injuries and they don’t want to lose him,” Ouaddou explained to SuperSport TV.
By referring to Enrique's approach at PSG, Ouaddou highlighted how top coaches sometimes make difficult selection decisions to protect important members of their squads.
The Pirates coach appears determined to avoid losing Appollis through an injury that could have been prevented through proper workload management.
His explanation also suggests that the winger's absence from the starting lineup should not automatically be interpreted as a loss of confidence in his abilities.
Pirates have several competitions to contest, making squad rotation and player fitness important parts of their preparations.
For Appollis, the priority will be to remain physically prepared and make the most of his opportunities whenever he is selected.
