Orlando Pirates Coach Abdeslam Ouaddou Reveals Why Oswin Appollis Has Been Sidelined in Recent Matches
Orlando Pirates head coach Abdeslam Ouaddou has finally addressed the growing questions surrounding Oswin Appollis’ reduced playing time, insisting that the decision to limit the attacker’s involvement is part of a carefully considered strategy to protect one of the club’s most valuable players.
Appollis, who enjoyed an outstanding debut campaign with the Buccaneers last season, has surprisingly found himself spending more time on the substitutes’ bench in recent matches. His reduced involvement has attracted attention among supporters, particularly considering the important role he played in Pirates’ successful campaign.
However, Ouaddou has made it clear that the situation has nothing to do with a loss of confidence in the talented attacker.
Speaking after Pirates’ Carling Knockout Cup quarter-final victory over Sekhukhune United on Saturday, 7 November, the Moroccan tactician reiterated that the club is deliberately managing Appollis’ workload to prevent fatigue and minimise the risk of injuries.
The Pirates coach explained that the 24-year-old has endured an extremely demanding period since arriving from Polokwane City in July 2025.
Appollis enjoyed an impressive first season at Orlando Pirates, establishing himself as an influential attacking figure before representing Bafana Bafana at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
According to Ouaddou, the combination of domestic and international football has placed considerable physical demands on the winger.
The coach previously described Appollis as one of the best players in South Africa, emphasising that footballers also need sufficient recovery time to maintain their performance levels.
Speaking about his approach, Ouaddou explained that Pirates are protecting their prized asset because they understand how important he will be during the decisive stages of the campaign.
The coach also dismissed speculation about possible problems involving the player, insisting that there is no controversy surrounding his reduced minutes.
He further indicated that supporters should expect to see more of Appollis as the season progresses.
For Pirates, the priority is ensuring that the attacker remains physically prepared for the challenges ahead rather than risking unnecessary exhaustion through excessive playing time.
Appollis remains an important part of Ouaddou’s plans, and the decision to manage his involvement could prove beneficial as the Buccaneers pursue further success across domestic and continental competitions.
Ultimately, Pirates supporters will be encouraged by the coach’s reassurance that the reduced minutes are temporary and that their attacking star remains firmly in the club’s long-term plans.
