Former Bafana Bafana goalkeeper Darren Keet has started a new chapter in his football career after securing a coaching position in Canada, following his retirement from professional football.
The experienced South African goalkeeper has joined a major Canadian sporting organisation, where he will use the knowledge and experience he gained during nearly 18 years as a professional footballer.
The 37-year-old enjoyed a successful career with several South African clubs, particularly Bidvest Wits, where he became known as one of the country's reliable goalkeepers. His performances also earned him international recognition, making 13 appearances for Bafana Bafana.
Keet also gained experience playing in Europe, representing Belgian clubs KV Kortrijk and OH Leuven. His time abroad exposed him to different football environments and helped broaden his understanding of the game.
According to the official staff directory of Ottawa City Soccer Club, Keet has been appointed as the organisation's High Performance and Goalkeeper Lead.
Founded in 2014, Ottawa City Soccer Club has grown into one of Canada's largest private sporting organisations, boasting more than 2,000 members.
In his new role, Keet will focus on goalkeeper development, sharing his expertise with aspiring players through specialised training and high-performance programmes.
His move into coaching follows the conclusion of his playing career, which ended on a memorable note. He announced his retirement after helping Durban City win the 2026 Nedbank Cup, following their 2-1 victory over TS Galaxy in the final.
The triumph was a fitting way to bring his professional career to an end, especially considering that he had previously won the same competition with Bidvest Wits in 2010.
Keet's transition into coaching allows him to remain part of the game while taking on a different challenge.
His experience in the PSL, international football and European leagues could prove valuable as he works to develop the next generation of goalkeepers in Canada.
Although his playing days are over, Keet is set to continue making a contribution to football from the sidelines.
