Orlando Pirates may have lost the MTN8 final to Mamelodi Sundowns, but former Buccaneers midfielder and iDiski TV analyst Benedict Vilakazi believes there were encouraging aspects of the team’s performance. While praising Thalente Mbatha’s contribution in midfield, Vilakazi identified a key weakness that may have prevented the Soweto giants from making a greater impact in attack.
The two South African football powerhouses met at Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban on Saturday, 10 October 2026, in a highly anticipated MTN8 final. Both teams entered the contest determined to claim the trophy, but Pirates were unable to overcome Sundowns, leaving their supporters disappointed.
Despite the defeat, Vilakazi was impressed by Mbatha’s display and stressed that the midfielder played an important role in helping Pirates compete against their opponents. However, he argued that the team lacked a player who could effectively connect the defence with the attacking department.
Speaking on iDiski TV, Vilakazi explained the situation, saying, "Pirates needed Mbatha in that midfield and he did very well. The only thing that we missed today was to have somebody to link from the defensive position to the attacking with Mbuthuma," Vilakazi said.
His analysis highlighted a tactical problem that affected Pirates’ ability to transition smoothly from defence to attack. Although Mbatha performed well in the middle of the park, the team needed another player capable of carrying the ball forward and creating opportunities for the forwards.
Sundowns are widely recognised for their possession-based approach and ability to control the tempo of matches. Against such opposition, effective distribution from the defensive line through midfield becomes particularly important. Without a reliable link between these areas, Pirates struggled to establish the attacking connections needed to trouble their opponents consistently.
Vilakazi’s mention of Yanela Mbuthuma also emphasised the importance of supplying the striker with quality passes. When midfielders fail to connect with the forward line, attackers can become isolated, reducing their opportunities to receive the ball in dangerous positions and threaten the opposition goal.
For Pirates coach Abdeslam Ouaddou, the observations could provide valuable lessons as he continues to improve the team's tactical organisation and attacking efficiency. Strengthening the connection between defence and attack could help the Buccaneers become more effective in future matches.
Although the MTN8 final ended in disappointment for Pirates, Mbatha’s performance offered some encouragement. However, Vilakazi’s assessment suggests that improving the team’s midfield transitions and attacking coordination will be essential if the Buccaneers hope to challenge Sundowns more effectively in upcoming encounters.
