Orlando Pirates head coach Abdeslam Ouaddou has moved to dismiss speculation about a possible breakdown in his relationship with winger Oswin Appollis, insisting that he has enormous respect for the player and considers him an important member of his squad.

Concerns had emerged among Pirates supporters over Appollis' reduced playing time in recent matches, with some questioning why the talented winger has not been featuring as regularly as expected. His limited involvement sparked speculation that there could be tension between the player and his Moroccan coach.

However, Ouaddou has firmly rejected suggestions that he has a personal problem with Appollis, describing him as one of the players he values highly at the Soweto giants.

Addressing the growing speculation, the Pirates coach expressed frustration with the narrative that he dislikes the winger, making it clear that his selection decisions have nothing to do with personal feelings.

“I can see that there is a growing agenda out there that I hate Oswin Appollis. I don’t hate Appollis. He is my diamond,” Ouaddou said.

The Moroccan tactician also explained that his decisions regarding Appollis' involvement are influenced by the club's ambitions and the need to manage the player's fitness carefully.

Ouaddou revealed that winning the CAF Champions League is among his major objectives at Orlando Pirates, suggesting that protecting important players from unnecessary injuries is essential to achieving that ambition.

“I have a Champions League to win. I need to protect him, especially when I see a risk of injury,” he added.

His explanation suggests that Appollis' reduced game time should not automatically be interpreted as a sign that he has fallen out of favour.

Pirates are competing across multiple competitions, making squad rotation and workload management particularly important as the season progresses.

For the Buccaneers, keeping Appollis fit and available could prove crucial, considering his attacking qualities and ability to influence matches.

Ouaddou's comments will therefore offer reassurance to supporters who feared that the relationship between the coach and the winger had deteriorated. The coach has made his position clear: Appollis remains highly valued, while the club's ambitions and the player's fitness remain his priorities.
