Orlando Pirates head coach Abdeslam Ouaddou has strongly dismissed speculation surrounding Oswin Appollis' recent absence from the starting line-up, insisting that there is no tension between the winger and the technical team at the Soweto giants.
Appollis has become an important attacking figure at Pirates since joining the club, with his creativity, pace and ability to influence matches making him a favourite among supporters. However, his recent reduced involvement, particularly Ouaddou's decision to leave him on the bench, has raised questions about his position within the team.
The situation prompted speculation among supporters, with some suggesting that there could be an underlying disagreement between the player and the coaching staff. Ouaddou has now moved to put those suggestions to rest, explaining that his selection decisions are based on football considerations rather than personal issues.
The Moroccan tactician highlighted the importance of managing players' physical conditions, particularly during a demanding season involving several competitions. He pointed to Paris Saint-Germain's management of Achraf Hakimi as an example of how clubs sometimes plan player involvement to protect their most valuable assets.
"I already explained the situation of Appollis. You see, in Paris Saint-Germain now, Luis Enrique said that he's going to play Hakimi in January," Ouaddou explained.
He added: "It's the same for us. There is nothing about around Appollis."
Ouaddou was particularly unhappy with the controversy being created around the Bafana Bafana international, reminding supporters that Appollis remains highly regarded within the squad.
"People must stop to create any polemics. Appollis is one of our best players, and we want..." he stated.
The coach's comments reinforce the importance of Appollis to Pirates' plans, despite the possibility of occasional rotation. With the Buccaneers competing for silverware on multiple fronts, managing workloads and avoiding unnecessary injuries will remain crucial.
Ouaddou will hope the attention shifts back to football as Pirates continue their campaign, with Appollis expected to remain an important attacking option.
