Orlando Pirates Face Evidence Makgopa Selection Dilemma Ahead of Soweto Derby Against Kaizer Chiefs

With just over a week remaining before the highly anticipated Soweto Derby on October 31, 2026, attention is turning to Evidence Makgopa’s availability and his potential role in Orlando Pirates’ attack against Kaizer Chiefs.

The striker’s situation has become a talking point among supporters, particularly following the encouraging performances of fellow forwards Boitumelo Radiopane and Yanela Mbuthuma. Their recent displays have given the Pirates technical team additional options as preparations for one of South African football’s biggest fixtures continue.

Makgopa, nicknamed “Ngwana Wa Sesi”, has experience playing in high-pressure matches and could offer valuable qualities if he is available for selection. His physical presence, ability to contest aerial balls and movement inside the penalty area make him a useful option when Pirates are looking to stretch opposition defences.

However, Radiopane and Mbuthuma have also strengthened their cases for involvement through their performances. Competition for the centre-forward position could therefore become an important selection decision for the coaching staff ahead of the derby.

Radiopane offers another attacking option, while Mbuthuma’s performances have provided further competition for places in the forward line. Their form means Pirates may not necessarily need to rush Makgopa back if there are concerns about his fitness.

The Soweto Derby is a fixture in which tactical discipline, composure and the ability to take chances often prove decisive. Pirates will want their selected striker to press effectively, link up with teammates and make the most of scoring opportunities.

Makgopa’s availability could give the coaching staff greater flexibility, whether he starts the match or provides an alternative from the bench. Nevertheless, his selection will depend on his physical condition, training progress and the technical team's assessment of the available options.

With anticipation building ahead of the encounter, the final decision could remain open until closer to matchday.

If Makgopa is fit, should Orlando Pirates restore him to the starting lineup, or should Radiopane and Mbuthuma retain their places based on their recent performances?
