Lorch To Become Free Agent?

Thembinkosi Lorch Set for Possible Free Agent Move as Kaizer Chiefs and Moroccan Clubs Show Interest

Former Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns attacker Thembinkosi Lorch could soon become a free agent ahead of the January transfer window, with reports indicating that he is approaching a mutual agreement to terminate his contract with Libyan giants Al-Ittihad Tripoli.

The 33-year-old South African footballer joined the Libyan outfit in February 2026 following his departure from Moroccan club Wydad Athletic Club. However, his move has not gone according to expectations, with limited playing opportunities affecting his progress.

Since arriving at Al-Ittihad, Lorch has featured in just seven matches, registering one goal and one assist. His situation has become even more uncertain following the appointment of experienced Tunisian coach Faouzi Benzarti, who reportedly does not consider him part of his plans for the 2026/27 campaign.

The decision reportedly followed an assessment of the squad during pre-season preparations and friendly matches. With Libyan league regulations allowing clubs to register only seven foreign players, Al-Ittihad have been forced to make difficult decisions regarding their international stars.

Benzarti is understood to favour other attacking options, including Moroccan international Sofiane Boufal, who operates in a similar position to Lorch. Consequently, the South African attacker has reportedly been placed among the players who could leave the club.

Although Lorch's current agreement runs until June 2027, both parties could reach a mutual settlement that would allow him to depart before his contract expires. Such an arrangement would make him available on a free transfer when the January window opens.

The possibility of Lorch becoming available has already sparked speculation about his next destination, particularly among South African football supporters.

The experienced attacker established himself as one of the country's most exciting players during his successful spell with Orlando Pirates, where his attacking creativity, technical ability and important goals made him a fan favourite.

He subsequently joined Mamelodi Sundowns before taking his career beyond South Africa's borders with moves to Morocco and Libya.

Despite his recent struggles, Lorch remains a versatile attacking player capable of operating on the left wing or in an advanced midfield role. His experience in domestic and international competitions could make him an appealing option for clubs seeking additional attacking quality.

Kaizer Chiefs have emerged among the teams being linked with a possible move for the former Pirates star. Some Amakhosi supporters believe his arrival could provide much-needed creativity, experience and attacking depth as the Soweto giants continue competing in the Betway Premiership.

A potential switch to Naturena would also attract considerable attention because of Lorch's previous association with Chiefs' traditional rivals, Orlando Pirates.

Meanwhile, a return to Moroccan football has not been ruled out. Former club Wydad Athletic Club and MAS Fes have reportedly been mentioned as possible destinations should the attacker decide to continue his career in the Botola Pro League.

At 33, Lorch could still have an opportunity to rebuild his career and demonstrate his quality at a competitive level. Securing regular playing time will likely be an important consideration as he evaluates his next move.

A return to South Africa could offer him familiar surroundings and another chance to establish himself in the Betway Premiership, while remaining in North Africa would allow him to continue his overseas career.

For now, his immediate future depends on whether Al-Ittihad Tripoli and his representatives can finalise an agreement to end his contract early.

With the January transfer window approaching, attention will be focused on developments surrounding the former Orlando Pirates star as speculation continues over whether Kaizer Chiefs or another interested club could secure his services.
