Ouaddou Issues Strong Warning to Pirates Players Despite Impressive Cup Win
Orlando Pirates head coach Abdeslam Ouaddou has issued a stern warning to his players, expressing his dissatisfaction with their performance even after a decisive 3-0 win over Milford FC in the Carling Knockout Cup on Tuesday night.
While the Buccaneers secured a spot in the quarter-finals with a solid victory at home, Ouaddou made it clear that merely winning would not suffice. He expects higher levels of dedication, focus, and teamwork from a team representing one of South Africa's premier football clubs.
“When playing for a big club like Pirates, we need to step up. I’m not here to coddle anyone,” Ouaddou stated following the match.
His remarks underscored the high expectations he aims to set at the Soweto-based club as they progress through domestic tournaments.
Entering the match as defending champions, Orlando Pirates were anticipated to easily defeat Milford FC. However, Ouaddou’s response indicated that he prioritized their overall performance over the victory itself.
The win prevented an early exit from the tournament and kept alive their chances of retaining the Carling Knockout trophy, yet the coach's evaluation pointed out that various aspects of their play fell short of his standards.
Particularly frustrating for him was the players’ tendency to make selfish choices in the attacking phase. Ouaddou noted that many opted to shoot instead of passing to teammates in better positions for clearer scoring chances.
He also raised concerns about the team's control of the game, suggesting that Pirates should have exhibited greater possession domination against their opponents.
“I believe the only positive is the win,” he remarked, acknowledging that the team rushed too many decisions and lacked the control he expected.
Despite his discontent, the outcome was never seriously in doubt after Pirates established a strong lead in the first half. Thapelo Mokobodi scored in the 15th minute, followed by two goals from Tshepang Moremi in the 34th minute and first-half stoppage time.
The victory not only confirmed Pirates' place in the quarter-finals but also set a favorable tone for an upcoming significant matchup against Kaizer Chiefs in the Soweto Derby.
However, Ouaddou emphasized that his aspirations extend beyond cup advancement. He aims for his team to vie for the Betway Premiership title and make a significant impact in the CAF Champions League.
He cautioned that the team would struggle to meet these goals if the players continued to make poor choices and fall short of the club's expectations.
For the Buccaneers, the directive is clear: individual talent must benefit the team, and each player must exhibit the discipline and commitment expected at a club of Pirates' caliber.
With the Soweto Derby on the horizon, Ouaddou hopes his candid criticism will yield positive results on the pitch. While the win against Milford FC met his desired outcome, his response suggests that the defending champions have considerable improvement ahead.
