Mashego Warns Chiefs About Spending R10 Million on Mahlambi

Former Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns striker Katlego Mashego believes TS Galaxy winger Seluleko Mahlambi is not worth the R10 million transfer fee set by club chairman Tim Sukazi amid interest from Kaizer Chiefs.

Mahlambi, who is 21 years old, enjoyed an impressive first professional season in the Betway Premiership, scoring six goals and providing six assists for TS Galaxy. His performances earned him two nominations at the PSL Awards and attracted interest from Chiefs as they look to strengthen their squad.

Kaizer Chiefs sporting director Kaizer Motaung Jr. reportedly made an opening offer of R4 million for the winger. However, Galaxy rejected the bid, with Sukazi making it clear that the club wanted at least R10 million for the young attacker.

The valuation has sparked debate among football supporters, with questions being raised about whether the amount is reasonable for a player who has completed only one season at professional level.

Mashego believes Mahlambi has shown potential but feels that Chiefs should carefully consider whether spending such a large amount on one player would help them challenge for the league title.

Speaking to KickOff, the former striker questioned whether the young winger had enough experience in the Premiership to make an immediate difference at Chiefs.

"The boy has not played much in the PSL, so I do not know whether he will be able to help Chiefs win the league. They would be paying half of the prize money awarded for winning the league for one player. Chiefs need players who can return them to where they belong, so I do not know if he is worth R10 million,” Mashego said.

Mashego acknowledged that Mahlambi had performed well for Galaxy last season but argued that one successful campaign should not automatically justify such a high transfer fee.

“R10 million sounds like a lot of money for a player who has performed well for TS Galaxy for one season. Did he really set the scene alight last season? Did he perform at the level of Rele Mofokeng and others?” he asked.

The former Pirates and Sundowns striker also questioned whether signing Mahlambi alone would be enough to end Chiefs' long wait for the Premiership title.

"The boy did very well last season, but will he end Chiefs’ league title drought, maybe if they are also going to sign other players? Spending R10 million on one player will not help a club improve," Mashego said.

His comments suggest that Chiefs may need to strengthen several positions rather than spend a large portion of their transfer budget on one player.

Mahlambi's future remains a subject of interest as the two clubs consider their positions. Galaxy will want to receive an offer that matches their valuation, while Chiefs must decide whether to increase their bid or explore other options in the transfer market.
