South Africa’s U15 national team suffered a narrow 4-3 defeat against Ivory Coast in the semi-final for positions 41 to 44 at the 2026 FIFA U15 World Cup.
The South African youngsters put up a determined performance but ultimately fell short against their Ivorian opponents in an entertaining encounter played on Thursday afternoon. Despite their efforts, the team could not secure victory and will now have to focus on their final fixture in the tournament.
Reatlegile Mosimane, Camden Schaper and Bohlale Finger were the goalscorers for South Africa, each contributing to the team’s three-goal tally. However, their efforts were insufficient to prevent Ivory Coast from claiming the victory and advancing in the classification matches.
The result means South Africa will compete for 43rd position in their final appearance at the competition. Although the defeat represents a setback for the young side, the remaining fixture offers them another opportunity to finish their campaign on a positive note.
Their next opponents will be determined by the outcome of the match between Niger and Uzbekistan. South Africa are scheduled to face whichever team loses that encounter, with both sides also looking to conclude their participation in the tournament with a victory.
The upcoming match will provide the South African players with another chance to demonstrate their abilities, improve their performance and gain valuable international experience. Competing against teams from different countries at this level can help young footballers develop their understanding of the game and prepare for future challenges.
For the South African U15 side, the immediate priority will be to recover from the loss to Ivory Coast and prepare adequately for their final assignment. The coaching staff will also have an opportunity to assess the team's performance, identify areas requiring improvement and encourage the players to approach the last game with confidence.
While the result against Ivory Coast was disappointing, South Africa will hope to respond positively in their final match and secure a better placing in the tournament. Their encounter against either Niger or Uzbekistan will determine whether they can end their 2026 FIFA U15 World Cup campaign with a win.
