Rulani Mokwena continued his impressive run at Pyramids FC after guiding the Egyptian side to a 4-1 victory over El-Gaish in the Egyptian Premier League.
The result extended Pyramids’ winning streak to 11 matches in all competitions, while their seventh consecutive league victory strengthened their position at the top of the standings. Mokwena’s team returned to domestic action after securing an away victory against South Sudanese side El Merriekh in the CAF Champions League.
Pyramids made a strong start to the match, taking the lead in the sixth minute through Mohanad Lasheen. The midfielder scored his second goal of the season, taking his total goal contributions to four.
The home side continued applying pressure and doubled their advantage in the 15th minute when Mostafa Ziko found the back of the net. However, El-Gaish responded in the 35th minute through Ahmed Tarek, who reduced the deficit to 2-1.
Pyramids remained dangerous in attack as they searched for another goal. Youssef Obama appeared to have extended their lead, but his effort was disallowed following a lengthy VAR review.
Mokwena’s side eventually secured the result with two late goals. Mahmoud Saber made it 3-1 with 10 minutes remaining in normal time, scoring his second goal in four days. Mahmoud Zalaka then converted a penalty in the 89th minute to complete the 4-1 victory.
The result left Pyramids five points clear at the top of the Egyptian Premier League, although second-placed Al Ahly have a game in hand. Mokwena will now prepare his players for the second leg of their CAF Champions League preliminary round tie against El Merriekh on Saturday evening.
Meanwhile, the South African coach has reportedly attracted interest from Spain, with Valencia CF linked with a possible appointment.
La Liga side Valencia CF have reportedly shown interest in former Mamelodi Sundowns coach Rulani Mokwena, offering him an assistant coach position with a monthly salary of R7 million.
Mokwena has reportedly agreed to personal terms with the Spanish club, with discussions continuing over the final paperwork. If the deal goes through, his proposed R7 million monthly salary would make him the highest-paid South African coach. However, the agreement and reported financial details have yet to be officially confirmed by either party.
Mokwena previously coached Mamelodi Sundowns before moving to Pyramids FC, where he has continued to build his coaching reputation. The reported Valencia opportunity would represent a potential move into Spanish football, although the position would be an assistant coaching role rather than a head coach appointment.
For now, Mokwena remains focused on his work in Egypt, where Pyramids are enjoying an excellent run of results. Their upcoming CAF Champions League fixture will provide another opportunity to maintain their momentum as they pursue further success in Africa.
