Mamelodi Sundowns assistant coach Steve Komphela has reportedly taken charge of the team’s training session at the club’s Kloorkop training base in the absence of head coach Miguel Cardoso, amid uncertainty following the Brazilians’ early exit from the CAF Champions League.
According to unconfirmed reports, Komphela led preparations as Sundowns continued getting ready for their upcoming Carling Knockout Cup clash against Marumo Gallants.
The development has sparked speculation among supporters about Cardoso’s position at the club, particularly after Sundowns’ disappointing continental campaign. However, it has not been officially confirmed that the Portuguese coach has been suspended, dismissed or removed from his duties.
Reports further claim that Sundowns management held an emergency meeting with Cardoso to discuss the team’s performance and the way forward following their early Champions League elimination.
The alleged meeting comes at a crucial time for the Tshwane giants, who are expected to shift their focus to domestic competitions while attempting to regain momentum.
Sundowns have built a reputation for competing for major honours both locally and on the continent. Their early Champions League exit has therefore raised questions about the team’s performances and the club’s plans for the remainder of the season.
Komphela, who has extensive coaching experience in South African football, could be called upon to help maintain stability as the team prepares for its next assignment. Nevertheless, his reported involvement in training does not, on its own, establish that a permanent change in the technical team is being considered.
For now, the circumstances surrounding Cardoso’s absence and the reported meeting remain unconfirmed. Sundowns supporters will be watching closely for an official update as the club prepares to face Marumo Gallants in the Carling Knockout Cup.
