Bafana Bafana starlet Relebohile Mofokeng came off the bench in the second half to help Royale Union Saint-Gilloise thrash KFC Nijlen 3-0 in the Belgian Cup on Sunday afternoon. The defending champions were held to a goalless score at half-time before the 21-year-old Sharpeville-born attacker was introduced. His arrival changed the game as Union powered to a comfortable win and booked their place in the Round of 16.
Raul Florucz opened the scoring in the 69th minute. Mofokeng then produced an assist of individual brilliance to set up Besfort Zeneli for the second goal in the 80th minute. Kamiel Van de Perre added a third three minutes later to complete the 3-0 victory. The result underlined Union’s strength as they continue their defence of the Belgian Cup.
Mofokeng has settled quickly since joining Royale Union Saint-Gilloise from Orlando Pirates in July 2026. The former Sea Robbers midfielder, who wears the same number 38 jersey he used at Pirates, has already contributed goals and assists in the Belgian Pro League and Europe. He scored the winning penalty in the Super Cup shoot-out against Club Brugge on his competitive debut and has added more goals in league matches. His form has also impressed former Bafana coach Hugo Broos, who previously thought the youngster would need more time to adapt.
The move from the Betway Premiership to Belgium came after Mofokeng played a key role in Orlando Pirates’ success and featured for Bafana Bafana at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. He continues to show the same energy and creativity that made him one of South Africa’s top young players. His assist against Nijlen adds another positive moment to a strong start in Europe.
South African fans have followed his progress closely. Many are pleased to see him making an impact for a club that competes in the Belgian Pro League and Europa League. Mofokeng’s ability to influence games even from the bench suggests he is growing in confidence and becoming a regular part of Union’s attacking plans.
As the season continues, the 21-year-old will look to keep contributing for both club and country. His performance against KFC Nijlen shows he remains a dangerous player when given the chance, and South African supporters will hope to see more of the same in the weeks ahead. The win keeps Union on track in the cup while further boosting Mofokeng’s growing reputation in European football.
