Kaizer Chiefs assistant coach Dillon Sheppard has raised concerns about the team’s failure to turn draws into victories, warning that an unbeaten record will count for little if Amakhosi continue dropping valuable points in the Betway Premiership.
The Soweto giants extended their unbeaten run in the 2025/26 league campaign after playing to a 1-1 draw against Stellenbosch FC at FNB Stadium on Tuesday night. However, the result marked Chiefs’ fifth draw in eight league matches, increasing concerns about their consistency and ability to challenge for the title.
Chiefs found themselves trailing shortly after the restart when Sinoxolo Kwayiba scored for Stellenbosch. Amakhosi responded through Mduduzi Shabalala, who equalised in the 58th minute.
Despite restoring parity and creating promising attacking opportunities, Chiefs were unable to find a decisive goal and had to settle for a point.
Sheppard admitted that the team’s finishing remains a major concern, particularly when players manage to reach dangerous positions in the final third but fail to make their opportunities count.
The assistant coach also pointed to defensive problems, explaining that Chiefs struggled to maintain the right balance between attacking in search of a winner and protecting their backline.
According to Sheppard, adjustments involving the wing-backs and midfielders did not produce the attacking improvement the technical team had hoped for. He stressed that the coaches must find ways to improve the team's finishing while maintaining better defensive organisation.
Although Chiefs have managed to avoid defeat in their league matches so far, their repeated draws have prevented them from collecting maximum points and building momentum in the title race.
Attention now turns to their CAF Confederation Cup assignment against Zambia’s Red Arrows on Saturday, 17 October. The match gives Amakhosi an opportunity to respond positively and work on the weaknesses exposed in their recent league performances.
Chiefs supporters will be hoping the team can sharpen its finishing, strengthen its defensive structure and start converting draws into victories as the campaign continues.
