Orlando Pirates have received a major boost following positive news regarding winger Oswin Appollis, who has returned to full training after an injury scare. However, head coach Abdeslam Ouaddou maintains a cautious approach, making it clear that the club will not rush the attacker back into competitive action before he is fully fit.
The timing of his return to training is particularly significant as the Soweto giants prepare for a crucial run of fixtures. In addition to their demanding commitments in the CAF Champions League, Pirates are gearing up for the highly anticipated Soweto Derby against fierce rivals Kaizer Chiefs on October 31.
Appollis caused widespread concern among supporters when he was stretchered off the pitch during Pirates' decisive 3-0 Betway Premiership win against TS Galaxy earlier this month. Before leaving the field, the winger played a pivotal role in the match, setting up Boitumelo Radiopane for the opening goal with a precise assist.
Following the match, Ouaddou suggested that the injury might have been triggered by severe muscle fatigue rather than long-term physical damage. The technical and medical staff opted to substitute him immediately to prevent any further strain or complications.
During the recent training sessions, the technical team closely evaluated Appollis' physical condition, specifically testing his ability to sprint, turn, and execute rapid directional movements without discomfort. Initial reports from the session were promising, with the player indicating that he felt no pain during the drills.
Despite these positive signs, Ouaddou stressed the importance of long-term squad management. He explained that high-performing athletes must be treated with carefully managed workloads to avoid burnout and recurring injuries during a long, demanding season.
Appollis' presence on the training pitch does not guarantee an immediate return to the starting lineup. The coaching staff will continue to monitor his progress daily to ensure he achieves total recovery. Given his sharp pace, tactical creativity, and ability to unlock opposing defenses, Pirates hope to have him back at full capacity, but only when he can play safely without risking another setback.
