Kaizer Chiefs have reportedly taken a significant step towards retaining the services of experienced midfielder Sibongiseni "Ox" Mthethwa after presenting him with a new contract offer as discussions over his future at Naturena gather momentum.
According to reports, Amakhosi have offered the 31-year-old midfielder a one-year contract, which includes an option to extend his stay at the club for an additional 12 months. The proposal indicates that Chiefs are interested in keeping the midfielder while maintaining flexibility in their long-term squad planning.
Mthethwa has established himself as a valuable member of the Chiefs squad since joining the Soweto giants. Although he does not always attract the same attention as the club's attacking players, his contribution in central midfield has been important, particularly when it comes to providing defensive protection and maintaining balance within the team.
The midfielder is known for his physical strength, determination, work rate and ability to break up opposition attacks. His willingness to compete for possession and protect the defensive line makes him an important option for the technical team, especially in demanding fixtures against strong opponents.
Chiefs have been working towards building a competitive squad capable of challenging for major trophies and closing the gap on rivals such as Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns. Retaining experienced players like Mthethwa could therefore form part of the club's strategy to achieve greater consistency.
The proposed one-year deal, with an additional 12-month option, also suggests that Chiefs want to avoid making long-term commitments while assessing the midfielder's continued contribution to the team.
However, the reported offer does not necessarily mean that an agreement has been reached. The final decision will depend on how negotiations progress and whether both parties are satisfied with the proposed terms.
For now, Mthethwa's future remains an important talking point at Naturena as Chiefs look to maintain stability and strengthen their squad ahead of upcoming challenges.
