Ouaddou Reveals How He Plans to Help Orlando Pirates Handle Champions League Pressure
Orlando Pirates head coach Abdeslam Ouaddou has outlined his approach to preparing the Buccaneers for the pressure of the CAF Champions League, emphasising the importance of mental strength, confidence and psychological readiness as the Soweto giants prepare for the 2026/27 campaign.
Pirates secured their place in the group stage after defeating Namibian side African Stars FC 5-0 on aggregate during the qualifying rounds. The achievement has raised expectations among supporters, who are hoping to see the club compete for continental glory.
However, Ouaddou understands that qualifying is only the beginning, with tougher challenges awaiting his team against some of Africa's most established clubs.
The Moroccan coach recognises that Pirates have several young players who are still adapting to the demands of representing one of South Africa's biggest football institutions. He believes developing their mental resilience will be just as important as improving their tactical organisation and physical condition.
Playing in the Champions League requires composure, particularly during difficult away matches where hostile crowds and intense pressure can influence performances. Ouaddou wants his players to remain confident, make better decisions and maintain concentration when the stakes are highest.
The coach has also highlighted the potential value of psychological support in helping footballers develop the mental tools needed to handle demanding continental encounters.
Pirates have a proud Champions League history, having won the competition in 1995. They also reached the semi-finals in the 2024/25 campaign under former coach Jose Riveiro.
The Buccaneers will be determined to build on that history after suffering a preliminary-round elimination against FC Saint-Éloi Lupopo last season.
With the group-stage draw scheduled for Cairo on October 28, Pirates will soon discover their opponents.
For Ouaddou, combining youthful energy with experience, confidence and mental toughness could prove crucial as the Buccaneers pursue continental success.
