Former Orlando Pirates star Steve Lekoelea has backed midfielder Simphiwe Masilela to play a more prominent role at the Soweto club, arguing that the youngster possesses qualities reminiscent of his own playing style.
Lekoelea, who earned recognition during his career for his exceptional dribbling, creativity and attacking flair, believes Masilela has the technical ability to make a significant contribution to the Buccaneers. He feels the midfielder deserves more opportunities to demonstrate his potential rather than spending extended periods on the bench.
The former Pirates playmaker has also suggested that Masilela could help address the creative responsibilities associated with the number 10 position, particularly following the influence of Relebohile Mofokeng in that role.
Mofokeng has become an important attacking figure for Pirates, making creativity and innovation in the final third essential to the team's approach. Lekoelea believes Masilela could offer another solution if the coaching staff gives him sufficient playing time to establish himself.
The former midfielder has questioned the decision to leave Masilela and Oswin Appollis on the bench during the MTN8 final. His remarks have renewed debate about the club's team selection and whether some of its attacking players are receiving enough opportunities to showcase their abilities.
According to Lekoelea's assessment, Masilela would benefit from starting more matches instead of being limited to a supporting role. Consistent involvement could help the midfielder develop confidence, improve his understanding with teammates and demonstrate greater consistency when competing at the highest level.
Pirates face considerable competition for places, with several players fighting for opportunities in a squad expected to challenge for major trophies. However, finding the right balance between established performers and emerging talent remains an important responsibility for the technical team.
Masilela's technical qualities could provide the Buccaneers with additional attacking options, particularly when opponents defend in numbers and limit the team's space in dangerous areas. Whether he can consistently deliver the creativity required at a club of Pirates' stature will depend on his performances and the opportunities he receives.
Lekoelea's backing carries significance because of his own reputation as one of the club's entertaining attacking players. Nevertheless, Masilela must translate his potential into convincing performances if he hopes to secure a regular starting position.
His next challenge will be to make the most of any opportunities that come his way and convince the coaching staff that he deserves a bigger role.
