Zothwane Delivers Strong Statement as Sekhukhune United Advance Past Richards Bay
Sekhukhune United's head coach, Papi Zothwane, has ample reason to feel optimistic after his team achieved a convincing 3-1 victory against Richards Bay FC in the Round of 16 of the Carling Knockout Cup at New Peter Mokaba Stadium on Sunday night.
The Limpopo-based team showcased their skills to secure a spot in the quarter-finals, keeping their dream of winning a trophy alive and further building the positive momentum surrounding the squad as they strive for success in domestic tournaments.
Sekhukhune entered the match eager to leverage their home-field advantage, although Richards Bay initially made it challenging for them to score. Babina Noko controlled key moments in the first half but couldn't find the net before the break.
A key moment occurred just before halftime when Sekhukhune was denied a penalty for a foul on Ngoanamello Rammala inside the box, which led the referee to award a free-kick outside the area, allowing Richards Bay to escape unscathed.
After halftime, Sekhukhune came back with renewed vigor, finally breaking the deadlock in the 53rd minute when Nigerian striker Chibuike Ohizu capitalized on a fine cross from Nyiko Mobbie, putting the home team ahead.
This goal boosted Zothwane’s squad, who continued pressing for more and were rewarded in the 83rd minute when substitute Thabang Makubo scored to extend their lead to 2-0. However, Richards Bay quickly answered back as Nqaba Xulu netted for the visitors in the 84th minute, momentarily sparking hopes of a comeback.
Yet, Sekhukhune remained resilient and in the 88th minute, Bethuel Muzeu sealed the match with a third goal, restoring their two-goal cushion and confirming a resounding 3-1 victory. Muzeu was instrumental, having assisted on Makubo’s goal prior to scoring himself.
For Zothwane, this victory is a significant stride toward fulfilling Sekhukhune's ambitions this season. He has previous cup-winning experience with Magesi, winning the 2024 Carling Knockout title, which could be advantageous as Babina Noko looks ahead in the competition.
Next, Sekhukhune will focus on their Betway Premiership match against Milford FC on October 31, aiming to keep the momentum going. Meanwhile, Richards Bay will need to regroup after their exit and prepare for their upcoming league clash with Kruger United.
With a quarter-final berth secured, Sekhukhune United has proven they have the resolve and attacking prowess to be formidable contenders in this year’s Carling Knockout Cup.
