Pirates Legend Jerry Sikhosana Reveals Heartbreak Over Club’s Treatment of Former Heroes

Orlando Pirates legend Jerry Sikhosana has reportedly expressed disappointment over how the club treats its former players, raising questions about whether football institutions do enough to honour the individuals who helped build their success.

Speaking on the Kasi Jam Podcast, Sikhosana recalled an experience in which he allegedly had to queue in the rain to obtain a ticket to watch an Orlando Pirates match. In contrast, he said Kaizer Chiefs figure Jessica Motaung provided him with a VIP ticket when he approached her for assistance.

The account has sparked debate about the recognition and respect afforded to former football stars, particularly those who played significant roles in their clubs’ historic achievements.

Sikhosana remains one of the most recognisable figures in Pirates’ history. He was part of the team that won the 1995 CAF Champions League, a landmark achievement that cemented the Soweto giants’ place among Africa’s elite football clubs.

For supporters, stories involving former players often raise broader questions about how clubs maintain relationships with the legends who contributed to their success long after their playing careers ended.

Sikhosana’s reported experience is particularly striking because of his contribution to Pirates’ legacy. While clubs regularly celebrate their history and former stars, concerns about access, recognition and support can create the perception that those contributions are not always adequately appreciated.

The comparison with Motaung has also added another dimension to the discussion, highlighting how gestures of respect from rival clubs can leave a lasting impression on former players.

However, the account reflects Sikhosana’s reported personal experience, and no response from Orlando Pirates was included in the information available.

The issue has renewed discussion about whether clubs should establish stronger programmes to support their legends, including matchday access, official recognition and meaningful involvement in club activities.

For a football institution with Pirates’ rich history, maintaining a respectful relationship with its former heroes could be just as important as celebrating trophies and pursuing future victories.

As the debate continues, supporters will be watching to see whether the club responds to the concerns surrounding the treatment of its former stars.
