Mbekezeli Mbokazi and Puso Dithejane experienced a tough night at Soldier Field as the Chicago Fire fell to a 3-1 defeat against a surging Philadelphia Union side. Despite a promising start that had the hosts dreaming of cementing their place near the top of the standings, the match turned decisively after the interval.
The Fire started brightly and managed to break the deadlock just before halftime. Winger Maren Haile-Selassie found the back of the net in the 45th minute, capitalizing on good build-up play and assists from Noah Allen and Jonathan Bamba. However, the momentum shifted dramatically in stoppage time at the end of the first half when Chicago center-back Jack Elliott picked up a second yellow card, leaving the home side to play the entire second half with only ten men. Mbokazi, who had also been booked earlier in the half, played the full match in defense, while Dithejane was introduced from the bench in the 67th minute to help stabilize the team.
Philadelphia wasted no time capitalizing on their numerical advantage after the restart. Milan Iloski leveled the score just four minutes into the second half. Energized by the equalizer, the visitors took control of the pitch. Forward Bruno Damiani put the Union ahead in the 55th minute following a crisp setup, and he struck again mid-way through the half to complete a well-earned brace. The comprehensive comeback victory extended Philadelphia's impressive unbeaten run to 14 matches while setting a new club record with eight consecutive wins.
For Chicago, the defeat serves as a frustrating setback during the final stretch of the regular season, but their overall position in the Eastern Conference remains stable. Sitting fourth in the table with 48 points from 29 matches, the Fire remain well-positioned in the play-off race. As the campaign approaches its climax, Mbokazi, Dithejane, and their teammates will look to bounce back quickly, fix their defensive discipline, and secure the consistency needed to finish among the conference's elite teams.
