Stellenbosch FC head coach Gavin Hunt has hinted at the possibility of using traditional man-marking tactics to deal with the threat posed by AmaZulu striker Thandolwenkosi Ngwenya ahead of their Carling Knockout Cup quarter-final encounter on Sunday.
Hunt acknowledged that Ngwenya's recent form has made him an important player for AmaZulu, forcing Stellenbosch to carefully consider how best to limit his influence during the crucial knockout fixture.
The experienced coach suggested that modern football tactics might not always provide the best solutions when dealing with dangerous attacking players, joking that his team could return to some of the traditional defensive methods used in the past.
“As they say about modern football, maybe we should go back to the old ways and man-mark a few people. I can tell you a few stories about man-marking," Hunt said.
His comments have attracted attention because man-marking was traditionally used to assign a specific defender to follow an opponent throughout a match, making it difficult for the player to receive the ball freely or create dangerous opportunities.
Ngwenya's attacking performances have clearly caught the attention of the Stellenbosch technical team, with Hunt recognising the importance of finding an effective defensive strategy before Sunday's meeting.
The Stellenbosch coach also highlighted the importance of awareness and concentration, explaining that defenders must remain alert throughout the game because Ngwenya's movement could create problems if he is given too much freedom.
Hunt was joined by defender Given Msimango during the pre-match media briefing, where the experienced centre-back also shared his thoughts on how the team intends to contain the dangerous forward.
Msimango admitted that defending against Ngwenya would require a collective effort rather than depending on one player to stop him. He also suggested that the team's defensive organisation, communication and tactical preparation would be important.
Ngwenya has enjoyed an outstanding campaign for AmaZulu, scoring 11 goals in 11 appearances across all competitions. His impressive scoring record makes him one of the players Stellenbosch must pay particular attention to.
AmaZulu will also arrive at the encounter with considerable confidence after recording six consecutive victories across all competitions.
The match is scheduled to take place at Danie Craven Stadium on Sunday, November 8, with kick-off set for 18:00.
