Orlando Pirates midfielder Patrick Maswanganyi was among the players watching from the stands as the Buccaneers faced Sekhukhune United in a Carling Knockout Cup quarter-final at Orlando Amstel Arena on Saturday afternoon.
His appearance away from the field drew attention because Pirates were competing for a place in the semi-finals while seeking to retain the trophy. Maswanganyi, widely known as Tito, was seen sitting with several teammates as the knockout contest unfolded.
Pirates were reported to be 1-0 ahead during the match, giving the defending champions an advantage in their attempt to move closer to another cup triumph. However, Maswanganyi was not part of the action on the pitch, prompting questions from supporters about why the attacking midfielder had not been selected.
There was no confirmed information explaining his absence. It therefore remains unclear whether the decision was related to team selection, his fitness or another circumstance. His presence among the spectators, on its own, does not establish that he is injured or unavailable for future matches.
The midfielder has become a familiar and popular figure among Pirates supporters through his contribution in attacking positions. His creativity, close control and ability to find teammates with incisive passes have made him a useful option when the club looks to unlock opposing defences. Fans will consequently be watching for an update on when he could feature again.
The quarter-final followed a convincing 3-0 victory over Milford FC in the previous round. Pirates also went into the meeting with a strong recent record against Sekhukhune, having beaten the side in each of their three previous encounters this season.
Those results offered encouragement, but a cup tie still required the Soweto club to deliver on the day. With the Carling Knockout title to defend, progression would keep Pirates on course to add another trophy and maintain their bid for silverware.
For now, the reason Maswanganyi watched from the stands has not been made public. Supporters will await clarification from the club or coaching staff, while hoping the midfielder will be available for the team's next fixtures as the demanding fixture schedule continues to unfold.
